5 Signs Your Tree Needs to Come Down Before It Falls on Its Own
Most hazardous trees look perfectly fine to the untrained eye. By the time decay and structural failure are obvious, the tree is already a serious danger. Here are the five signs our arborists flag as urgent removal indicators.
1. Large Dead Branches (Widow Makers)
Dead branches — especially those over 2 inches in diameter — are called widow makers for a reason. They can fall without warning, even on calm days. If you see multiple large dead branches in the canopy, have the tree assessed immediately.
2. Significant Lean That Wasn’t There Before
A tree that has always leaned slightly is usually stable. But a lean that developed suddenly — especially after a storm or period of heavy rain — suggests root failure or structural compromise. Look for soil heaving or cracking on the opposite side of the lean.
3. Fungal Growth at the Base
Mushrooms, conks, or shelf fungi growing from the trunk or roots are a reliable indicator of internal decay. The fungal fruiting bodies you see represent extensive decay already present inside the wood. A tree with significant base rot may appear healthy above while being structurally compromised at the root level.
4. Root Damage or Construction Nearby
If a driveway, utility trench, or foundation was installed or repaired within the last few years and cut through major roots, the tree may be destabilizing slowly. Root loss reduces both anchorage and the tree’s ability to absorb water and nutrients — decline can take 2–5 years to become visible.
5. V-Shaped Crotches on Large Limbs
Unlike U-shaped branch unions, V-shaped (or included bark) crotches are structurally weak and prone to splitting under load — especially snow, ice, or strong wind. If a major limb with a V-crotch hangs over your home, car, or play area, it’s a hazard worth acting on now rather than later.
